On a 7-0 vote the Board of Supervisors approved the Giles Farm rezoning in their January 26 meeting. The 268-acre tract, located in the Chickahominy district along Atlee Station Road,  will have 442 residences, both single family and townhomes, at buildout.

The Planning Commission had denied approval 6-1 in November and the case advanced to the Board level. Commissioners and citizens cited several concerns, many with traffic. Fearing high volume traffic and speed, the Atlee Manor residents did not want connecting roads between the two developments. A single road leading to the rear of the Giles Farm tract also raised  a public safety concern.

Other citizens wanted to see more passive open space, water features that would be living ecosystems instead of dead zones of polluted runoff, and less density adjacent to the Chickahominy wetlands.

The Supervisors approved the rezoning with removal of the neighborhood road connections, against advice of the county Planning Department.
